Earn Special BadgesAt the Sacramento History Museum, our education school programs can help your troop complete parts of your badges. Below is a list of programs that we offer and parts of badges that can be completed. If you have questions about other programs in relation to badges, please reach out to the Education Department at SHM-Education@sachistorymuseum.org or at 916-808-6896.
The American Heritage Badge
4a. Explain the National Register of Historic Places and how a property becomes eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
- Old Sacramento and other locations in the historic park are on the National Register of Historic Places, and there are other spots in Old Sacramento that are also on the NRHP. Your troop can do our Old Sacramento Scavenger Hunt to explore Old Sacramento and look for different plaques around the district.
4b. Research an event of historical importance that took place in or near your area. If possible, visit the place.
- Our Gold Rush Program and Heading West programs look at the historic events of the Gold Rush and western migration. Each program includes take-home mementos that discuss real people who came to California for these events and the teacher packets provide supplementary materials to continue doing research.
4d. Take an active part in a program about an event or person in American history.
- Our Heading West program includes a game portion where, after learning about western migration, they will take their own “journey” to California. They will pick their own supplies and see if they can make it to California. There is also a take-home memento about a real person who took these routes and made it to California.
4e. Visit a historic trail or walk in your area. After your visit, share with your counselor what you have learned.
- Our Old Sac Scavenger Hunt allows the group to explore Old Sacramento and provides some history about the places you are looking for on the hunt.
5c. Listen to recordings of popular songs from various periods of American history.
- We have a Travel Trunk that can be rented for two weeks. It provides songs as well as other resources that could also help with parts of the American Heritage badge such as 4b and 4d.
Archaeology Badge
- Learn about a combined total of five archaeological sites located both within and outside the United States.
- Our Underground Tour includes an archaeological site. The teacher packet can also provide some supplementary resources to help with the research.
7a. Visit a museum to observe how artifacts aid in conveying history.
- Our Museum Scavenger Hunt allows the group to visit the museum, see the artifacts, and observe how they are used to convey history. Supplemental resources are provided to help with observations in the museum.
7c. Make a list of the trash your family throws out during one week. Discuss with your counselor what archaeologists might learn about you and your family if they found your trash a thousand years from now.
- One of the sites on out Underground Tour includes an archeological dig, where the group can see many discarded items and make some observations about what can be learned from these items. Our teacher packet can also provide some supplemental resources to help with the activities.
- Research a group of people who lived in your area more than 100 years ago. Find out about their ways of life, including housing, clothing, arts and crafts, tools, trade and markets, rituals and religions, and diets, and their relationships with other groups of people in the area. Describe what you would expect to find at an archaeological site where these people lived. Explain how these people influenced your current community.
- Our Underground Tour and our History Mystery Trunk could help provide insight into how people lived more than 100 years ago. In our History Mystery Trunk program, the group will see a trunk and pull items out of the trunk to try and figure out who it belonged to. At the end of the program, the docent will reveal who the trunk belonged to, talk about their life, and show the real trunk the program is based on.
