Meet President Theodore Roosevelt

You will hear about Theodore Roosevelt’s 1903 visit to California – highlighting his commitment to conservation, national unity, and the expanding role of the federal government in preserving natural resources. During the trip, he famously visited Yosemite National Park with naturalist John Muir, where their camping experience helped solidify Roosevelt’s dedication to protecting wilderness areas. This visit directly influenced major conservation policies, including the expansion of national parks and forests, and strengthened the broader Progressive Era goal of responsible environmental stewardship. Additionally, his presence in California symbolized the growing importance of the West in American political and cultural life, reinforcing the idea that the nation’s natural landscapes were a shared heritage worth preserving.

Presented by the Sacramento History Museum, Meet President Theodore Roosevelt will take place in the Celebration Arts Theatre located at 2727 B Street in Sacramento. Tickets for this special Chautauqua evening are $40 for adults, $30 for members, and $20 for youth (recommended for ages 8 and above).

About the Performer
Michael Romero is a historical interpreter/performer from Santa Rosa, California. He was first exposed to the history of theatre Roosevelt when he was in an AP US history class at Santa Rosa high school, but he became interested in portraying Theodore Roosevelt when he was cast in the role of Teddy Brewster in the Raven Player’s production of Arsenic and Old Lace. His historical research for this role led to him reach out to his mentor Joe Wegund, an ambassador for the Medora Theodore  Roosevelt Foundation. Wegund had performed as Theodore  Roosevelt at the White House and in the IMAX film National Parks Adventure. This encounter led to Michael performing Theodore Roosevelt at the annual Badlands in Medora, North Dakota, joining other historical presenters from across the country. Michael works in theatre and opera as a costume designer and technician with an MFA in Costume Design from the University of Georgia and a BA in theatre arts from UC San Diego. He is very excited to introduce audiences to the life of Theodore Roosevelt. BULLY!

What is Chautauqua?

The Chautauqua gets its name for its area of origin, Chautauqua, New York, and is modeled after the entertainment of the 19th century in which performers enact the life of a celebrated historical figure. In the 20th century it became a three-part performance by a scholar-actor who portrays the character and responds to audience questions in character. Finally, the performer returns to answer more questions from the audience. It is fun, participatory history!
